Fixing a crease isn’t one push — it’s dozens of tiny, precise pushes worked up and down the length of the line until the metal is coaxed back to level.
This is why a crease the same length as a soft dent can take three or four times longer to repair. It’s also why crease work separates a hobbyist from a trained tech. Push too hard in one spot and you create a high spot that’s worse than the original dent. The skill is in reading the line and releasing the tension gradually.
The factors that decide whether PDR will work on your crease
When I look at a crease, I’m running through a mental checklist. Here’s what actually moves the needle:
- Paint condition. If the paint is cracked, chipped, or flaking along the crease, PDR alone won’t restore it — the finish is broken and will need paint. Intact paint is the single biggest green light.
- Sharpness. A soft, rounded crease relaxes out far more easily than a knife-edge fold. The sharper the line, the more the metal stretched.
- Length and location. A long, gentle crease across the middle of a door is very workable. A short, deep crease right on a body line or panel edge is the toughest case.
- Access to the back. PDR works the metal from behind. If the crease sits where there’s bracing, foam, or a double-walled panel we can’t reach, options narrow and we may use glue-pull techniques from the outside.
- Panel material. Aluminum (common on newer trucks and some luxury cars) holds its shape harder and is less forgiving than traditional steel, so aluminum creases take more patience.
How we actually repair a crease
Here’s the order of operations on a typical door crease, so the “magic” makes sense:
- Read the damage under an LED line board. The reflection of the light bar over the crease tells us exactly where the highs and lows are.
- Gain access behind the panel — removing a door card, taillight, or trim piece so a rod can reach the back of the crease.
- Work the ends of the crease first. The tips hold the most tension; releasing them lets the middle move.
- Make many small pushes along the line, constantly re-checking the reflection, slowly walking the metal up to level.
- Knock down any high spots from the outside with a tap-down tool until the surface reads flat under the light.
- Final inspection in daylight and under the board to confirm the line is gone before we call it done.
A crease isn’t fixed with one heroic push. It’s a hundred patient ones — and that patience is the difference between “mostly gone” and “invisible.”
When a crease can’t be fully fixed with PDR
